English Language Acquisition

Q: What does the law require in terms of students learning English as a second language?

The district must annually notify the parents of all eligible students of the following:

  1. The reason why their child has been identified as an English Language Learner and in need of English Language Acquisition services.
  2. Their child's proficiency in English and level of achievement.
  3. The type of program in which their child will be participating, including goals, use of English/native language, and program alternatives.
  4. How the program will help their child learn English and meet age level performance standards.
  5. Program exit requirements, transition rates, and graduation rates.
  6. The parent's right to remove their child from the program and schools and pursue other instructional options, if available.
  7. If English Language Learners fail to make Annual Yearly Progress or transition to instruction only in English in appropriate length of time.
