Q: What does the law require?
- Schools in the first year of school improvement must offer parents the option of transferring students to another district school not on improvement, with transportation provided.
- Adjustments can be made to the Title I allocations to help pay for this.
- Districts designate the receiving schools. Students can stay at their school of choice through the highest grade offered. For example, if a second grader enrolls in a school of choice, he/she may stay there until the end of the fifth grade.
- The district no longer is required to provide transportation if the school is no longer on the improvement list.
- Parents will be notified annually of their options during the school choice enrollment process.
